Alkeran 2 mg Tablet is a medication used in the treatment of certain types of cancers. Manufactured by Glaxo Smith Kline Pharmaceuticals Ltd, it contains Melphalan as its active ingredient.

 

Uses

Alkeran 2 mg Tablet is used for the following,

  • Treating ovarian cancers.

  • Treating a type of bone marrow cancer called Multiple Myeloma.

Your doctor may prescribe it to treat other illnesses as deemed fit by him.

 

How does the Alkeran 2 mg Tablet work?

Melphalan contained in the Alkeran 2 mg tablet alters the RNA and DNA of the cancer cells. This inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis necessary for these cells to survive, causing cytotoxicity to cancer cells. This stops their spread and prevents further growth of cancer.

 

Side Effects

Side effects of Alkeran 2 mg tablet commonly reported are,

  • Nausea, vomiting

  • Bone marrow suppression

  • Reduced white blood cell count, increasing the risk of infections

  • Decreased platelet count 

  • Increased risk of bleeding

  • Loss of appetite

 

Other less reported side effects include,

  • Severe allergic reactions

  • Pulmonary fibrosis 

  • Hair loss

  • Mouth or lip sores

  • Rash

  • Itching

  • Irreversible bone marrow failure 

  • Cardiac arrest

Usually, the side effects are not severe, but the treatment must be stopped on time to prevent severe issues like bone marrow failure or pulmonary fibrosis.

Other side effects are usually temporary and go away when the treatment ends. If they seem to persist or worsen, kindly contact your doctor.
